Part J: Combustion appliances and fuel storage systems
J1. Air Supply For the fuels which power heating appliances to burn efficiently, they have to be provided with an adequate air supply which enables the fumes to be drawn up the flue or chimney, otherwise deadly carbon monoxide or smoke can build up in the building. Deaths have occurred because appliances were not adequately ventilated.
 
J2. Discharge Of Products Of Combustion Outlets for flues and chimneys need careful consideration to ensure that the appliances they service work effectively.
 
J3. Protection Of Building Heat producing appliances, flues and chimneys are themselves a fire risk and this must be taken into account in their design and construction.
 
J4. Provision of Information A durable notice shall be provided, containing information of the performance capabilities of any hearth, fireplace, flue or chimney.
 
J5. Protection of Liquid Storage Systems Storage systems shall be constructed so as not to produce a high level of risk of ignition.
 
J6. Protection against Pollution Oil Storage tanks and pipework shall not be constructed in a manner that may create a risk to the environment.
