Part C: Site Preparation and Resistance
to Moisture
C1. Preparation
Of Site Vegetation and topsoil must be removed from a site
before building can start.
C2. Dangerous
And Offensive Substances Increasingly these days, buildings
are constructed on sites which may have been contaminated or have
been waste tips or similar. Sometimes substances and materials found
in these areas are harmful or cause a health risk. They have to
be identified, removed or treated to make them harmless. Precautions
must be taken to avoid the ingress and accumulation of harmful gasses
such as Radon and Methane.
C3. Subsoil
Drainage Very often ground water exists naturally just below
the surface of the ground. If left it would get into the building
making it unhealthy and possibly damage the building itself. To
avoid this it is sometimes necessary to provide special drains to
take the water away.
C4. Resistance
To Weather And Ground Moisture The walls, floors and of course
the roof of a building must be designed and constructed so as to
be adequately waterproof.
